Insuring your car after a criminal conviction

Suppose you are a driver with a criminal record - you may have been found guilty of a criminal offence, perhaps received a custodial sentence, community service or on parole from a prison sentence - you might be refused or declined car insurance cover by some insurance companies unable to offer ex-offenders car insurance at normal terms, if they are prepared to offer a car insurance quote at all. For drivers with non-motoring criminal convictions, you need to know which insurance companies will be willing to offer a quote for your car insurance.

Why use car insurance for ex-offenders?

When requesting a car insurance quote from most insurers, you will be required to inform them of any previous convictions, including non-motoring criminal convictions. Unfortunately, this will often dramatically increase the premium cost; insurers may even decline to offer an insurance quote in some cases. Specialist car insurance for people with convictions can offer bespoke quotes based on your requirements and history.

Who does car insurance for ex-offenders cover?

Ex-offenders car insurance covers those with:

  • Police cautions
  • Probation or parole
  • Custodial prison or young offender sentences
  • Community service
  • Electronic tags and curfew orders

Motoring related convictins?

If you have a previous motoring conviction, such as speeding or dangerous driving, please visit our accidents and previous claims page. Additionally, if you have a previous drink and/or drug driving offence, you will need specialist help and would be well suited to look at our drink driving insurance and/or drug driving insurance page.

How can we help?

QuoteRack specialises in non-standard and higher risk insurance and we have helped many ex-offenders find insurance cover for their car insurance, home insurance, bike insurance and business insurance.

Frequently asked questions

What if I don't declare my criminal convictions?

If your insurer asks you to declare your previous criminal convictions, you must do so. If not, your insurance could be made invalid, and you would not be insured in the case of an accident. Furthermore, as with any 'material non-disclosure', you may also be declined insurance from any other providers in the future.

For ex-offenders trying to insure their cars, declaring a prison sentence or any unspent criminal conviction as a 'non motoring conviction' significantly reduces the number of insurers willing to offer car insurance quotes.

Is car insurance for ex-offenders expensive?

As with any insurance policy, this depends on your individual circumstances and the factors that will affect your ex-offenders car insurance quote, such as your age, location, where you leave your car during day and night and your driving experience, as well as the value of the vehicle.

There are, however, ways that you can obtain cheaper insurance for ex-offenders car drivers, such as:

  • Choosing a car in a lower insurance group
  • Restricting your annual mileage
  • Adding an older, more experienced driver to the policy
  • Restricting the use and number of drivers of the vehicle
  • Increase your insurance policy excess
  • Install a telematics 'black box' that monitors how the car is being driven
  • Install a dash cam
  • Garage the car overnight
  • Fit a tracking device to the car
  • Pay your insurance premium annually

What does ex-offenders car insurance cover?

  • Comprehensive: This covers the driver, the car, its passengers, property, third parties, vandalism and theft
  • Third-party, fire and theft: This covers third parties in the event of an accident, as well as fire or theft. It does not cover your vehicle in the event of an accident or vandalism.
  • Third party only: The most basic, cheapest and legal minimum level of cover in the UK. This covers third parties injury and damage to third party property.
